Multimedia Glossary A - B - C - D - E - F - G - H - I - J - K - L - M - N - O - P - Q - R - S - T - U - V - W - X - Y - Z -W A Alpha Channel The alpha channel represents a strip of 8 extra bits; the formats that allow an alpha channel have 32 bits. The colours in a colour display system are calculated by the number of bits – that is, 8, 16, 24, or 32. A system that displays 8 bits contains 256 colours or hues. The most common system is 24 bits; it contains thousands of colours. An image containing an alpha channel is composed of Red, Green, and Blue channels, plus the alpha channel. The alpha channel is composed of 256 shades of grey that define the transparent areas of the image – black representing completely transparent, and white completely opaque. Alphanumerical Combining letters and numbers, often in reference to naming files. For example: 2_1tic.gif Animated GIF Image file in GIF format that contains a series of compressed images that simulate movement, as is done to produce an animation. B Binary The binary system is what computers use to function. This number system is based on 0 and 1 in computer programming. Number 1 represents a state in which current is allowed to pass, while 0 represents the state in which the electrical current is cut. It is the only system a computer can process. Bit Derived from the words “binary” and “digit”. A bit is based on the binary system and is used to store data in groups of 8 and multiplications of 8, to execute functions and instructions. There are 8 bits in a byte and computers usually read 2, 3, or 4 bytes at a time. Bitmap / Raster graphics Colorimetric mode in which each pixel contains one data bit, either black (no electricity) or white (electricity on). The extension for this kind of document is .bmp. Bitmap images are affected by screen resolution and printing processes. They are also prone to aliasing. Byte A byte is composed of 8 bits of information. Older computers could process no more than one byte at a time, whereas today they can read 2, 3, 4 or more, functioning at 16, 24 or 32 bits and more. A byte allows you to obtain 256 different binary values, which are called hexadecimal values (hexa means six in Greek). This means that 16 bits allows you to obtain 65,000 values and 24 bits produces over 16 million values. C CMYK Subtractive colorimetric mode used for printing. In this mode, colours visible on the screen could be outside the range of printable colours. Furthermore, not all filters can be applied to an image in this mode. F Frame Created with HTML code, frames are used to divide a Web page into several windows, each of which displays a screen G GIF (Graphical Interchange Format) Acronym for Graphical Interchange Format, this is a Bitmap file format for 256-colour indexed images. It will display transparency. GIF compression proceeds in a non-destructive, linear fashion. This format is most suitable for solid colour images. Extension: .gif H Hertz A sound has a certain amplitude, which is measured between its minimum and maximum. Hertz is therefore a unit of measurement for the number of times – the frequency – that the sound makes a cycle (from minimum, to maximum, to minimum) per second. Host The host is the computer on which information is stored for retrieval, such as a Web page. HTML (HyperText Markup Language) HTML is a language constructed of tags enabling the creation of hypertext documents and represented by a browser. This code represents the skeleton of a Web page. HTML is the standard language for creating websites and is one of the Standard Generalized Markup Languages (SGMLs). The most common file extension is .htm. http / Hypertext Transfer Protocol The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is used to transfer hypertext or hypermedia documents between a Web server (the site you are on) and your personal computer. I Image Map Area of an image that works as a hyperlink used for navigation. J JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group, JPEG file compression format has a .jpg extension. The JPEG format displays an image in millions of colours. Useful for photographs, JPEG has the disadvantage of using a destructive compression process. PDF files preserve a visual representation of the original files which are viewed with the Acrobat Reader® software. They also preserve fonts and bitmap graphics, and can contain electronic document search and navigation features such as electronic links. The PDF format is often used on the Web or for e-mail. PDL (Page Description Language) Acronym of Page Description Language, this language is used to define a page according to the way it is to be printed or displayed onscreen. The commands are not executed by the computer, but by printing or display peripherals. For example, the PostScript language. Pixel Blend of the words “Picture” and “Element”, a pixel is a small square that represents a graphic unit in a bitmap image. Bitmap images are made up of a mosaic of pixels placed on a grid. Pixels represent two characteristics: resolution and depth. R Raster / Bit-Mapped Graphics An image made up of pixels. The shapes are coded according to the position of pixels on a matrix, or map. Photoshop is a Raster graphics program, as it manipulates the pixels of images. Pixel-based images are called “Bitmaps”. A bitmap image contains a precise number of pixels, which determine the resolution, expressed in ppi. RGB Additive colorimetric system composed of Red, Green, and Blue. An RGB pixel includes a minimum of 24 bits of information, eight per colour. Three electron barrels shoot one of the three components of visible light onto the screen, producing a color pixel. Rollover Effect Action on the interface that reacts when the mouse passes over a specific element, usually attributed to an object. The rollover activates a change in an object’s appearance, be it in shape or colour, or both. This effect can be found in all types of interactive media, such as video games or websites. S Storyboard A document assembling all the information for production. It includes columns for names, sketches, technical notes, icons, and text. It includes rows for each screen page, for transitions, and animations. T TIFF (Tagged- Image File Format) This format enables the exchange of image files between Mac OS and Windows platforms. V Vector Image file format that is made of lines and curves defined by mathematical objects called vectors. Vector files are light and the image produced can be modified without losing any of its quality. This format is mainly used with Macromedia Flash, Freehand and Adobe Illustrator. VRML Acronym of Virtual Reality Modeling Language, this language is a markup language and enables the display of 3D virtual environments. It is also used to build interactive applications, such as interactive games on CD-ROM. W WebSafe Colours Colours that are not affected by browser dithering when displayed on the Web. X XML Acronym of Extensible Markup Language, this language enhances basic HTML by permitting the author to write up his or her own code in order to customize the product.
